The City of Sumner will continue its partnership with Republic Services for trash collection following action by the city council Tuesday evening.
Council members voted to approve an ordinance granting Republic Services exclusive franchise rights for a one-year contract. The agreement includes a $1.25 rate increase for residential customers, raising the monthly fee to $12.75. The new rate will take effect at the end of the current contract period.
City Administrator Travis Trainer also informed the council that Sumner has been awarded a $450,000 infrastructure improvement grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Trainer is scheduled to meet with IDOT and Lawrence County officials later this week to discuss project details.
If plans move forward as expected, the grant agreement could be signed by the end of October, with bids anticipated in the spring of 2026 and construction beginning by mid-summer or early fall.
