South Gibson School Board Meeting Tuesday, October 14th

The South Gibson School Board met on Tuesday in a short meeting that saw a light agenda.

The meeting opened with a hearing on a collective bargaining agreement before voting to approve consent items submitted by from Mr. Armstrong.

The board also voted in favor of renew licensing of software used for H.R. and accounting.

The school board approved a proposal to introduce a new online software, Edmentum, which is designed to help students who have gotten behind or need extra help or extra credit, in order to help get or keep kids on track for graduation. With Edmentum students would be able to take multiple classes over time where most comparable tools charge for each individual class. The proposal would run the online software for a one-year period and with reconsideration at the end of the year.

It was announced that enrollment for the year stands at 2,147 students, up 36 over last year. High School enrollment is 777, which is an increase. This year’s Freshman enrollment is well over 200 as is the Senior enrollment, with Sophomore and Junior enrollment at around 180 students.

In sports announcements: The Boys Tennis team were Sectional Champions this year, and made an appearance in the Regional Finals. Girls Soccer played in the Regional Semi-Finals this past Thursday night, and Volleyball will be kicking off this Thursday night.

Regarding the weight room update, everything is on track to finish up in December; the weight room is due to be open in January after the Holiday Break.

There will be an SBOE vote in December to discuss the new grading system due to be put into place next year. Under the new program more high school credits need to be taught at the 7th and 8th grade levels for advance credit. Currently four classes are being discussed including College & Careers, and Digital Computing. Work also continues towards the new diplomas.

Lastly, it was announced that there is currently an selection from the applicants for the position at the high school. The individual is currently finishing up her student teaching, and is due to graduate in December. The individual will hold the licensure for both English and Social Studies, with interest in coaching volleyball. The new teacher would start January 4th. More information will be announced at the meeting on the 28th.
