The Lawrenceville City Council met Thursday evening, continuing discussions on the city’s recent compliance commitment agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). The agreement follows allegations of multiple violations related to the city’s sanitary sewer system.
This was the council’s first formal meeting since Mayor David Courtney announced the city’s decision to enter into the agreement earlier in the week. Under the terms of the agreement, the city must implement several operational and reporting changes within its wastewater management department.
During the meeting, public discussion centered on operator licensing and certification requirements. The exchange became at times contentious, though no formal actions were taken. Mayor Courtney reaffirmed the city’s commitment to cooperating with the IEPA and achieving full compliance with state environmental regulations.
In other business, the council approved the annual tax levy ordinance on first reading, with final passage expected at a future meeting. Members also authorized a $1,000 appropriation to the Lawrence-Allison Fire Protection District to assist in the purchase of a new firefighter rehabilitation unit.
Police Chief Jim White announced that trick-or-treat hours for Halloween will be observed on Friday, October 31, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Central Time.
