Federal Shutdown Threatens November SNAP Benefit

If the federal government shutdown continues into November, millions of Americans — including those in Illinois — could lose access to their monthly food benefits.

Federal officials with the Trump Administration have informed states that funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will not be provided in November unless Congress and the President reach an agreement to reopen the government.

As a result, Illinois SNAP recipients are being warned that November benefits may not be issued. The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) said the situation remains uncertain but emphasized that the state is sharing this information so families can plan ahead in case benefits are not available on November 1.

In previous shutdowns, Congress and the President acted before families missed their assistance. However, with no resolution yet in sight, the state is urging recipients to stay informed.

Illinois officials say they are awaiting further guidance from federal authorities. Updates will be posted on the SNAP Federal Impact Center at www.dhs.state.il.us/?item=174038.
