The Oakland City Board of Works met on Tuesday, October 14th prior to the regular city council meeting. Kenny Willis was the only member not in attendance.
The meeting started with the B.O.W. Voting to accept the minutes of the September 23rd meeting, along with the review of claims for the October 14th meeting.
In old business, regarding a year-old matter on Dongola Rd., the board had received a request for reimbursement of $5500 for work done. The board noted that the issue had been tied up in an insurance manner, causing the delay in payment. On Friday, October 10th the board reached out to the involved party; at which time it was agreed the city would settle the matter at a reduced cost of $2500. It was noted that the deductible for the city’s insurance is $5000, so the agreement saved the city a substantial amount.
In new business, work has begun on the 2026 Community Crossing Grant. It was also reported that the board has met with Dave Dawson from Onyetts Fabricating about work needed on the hatches of the Clearwell at the water plant, as well as some work needed on the storm sewer covers.
The board announced that city workers have been working at the water plant to improve where the trucks back in to pump out the septic system. City workers have also been busy working on the water leak on South Jackson St., as well as the storm sewer on outer Oak St.; both issue have been fixed. Also fixed was a water leak reported on Sunday, October 12th, located behind the Police Chief’s residence, and a sink hole located near the intersection of Trusler and Jackson streets.
In Department Head Reports:
Police Chief Tim Gaines reports that the department is in the process of getting the GPS installed in the new vehicles, Radar has already been installed.
Parks Director Phil Young spoke on addressing deficiencies in the Health Inspection Report. Among the needed improvements are four new doors with screens, a six inch pipe to cover a water line, and a few other minor maintenance issues. Total cost of repairs to get to compliance is estimated near $350.
