The Vincennes City Council held their final meeting of September on Monday. Prior to the meeting, the council held a public hearing on the proposed city budget for 2026. Nobody spoke for or against the budget during the public hearing.
The council tabled the reading of the downtown building usage ordinance, which would prohibit the use of buildings on Main Street from 6th to 1st Street for residential space on the street level of the building.
The council on first reading approved the 2026 budget. The budget is for just over $22 million. The board voted 5-0 on the measure.
The board approved and paid claims and payroll. The board also approved a transfer of $48,000 from the Pantheon to Insurance Expense.
Dennis Kordes from the Vincennes Tree Board appeared before the board to discuss items the tree board could do for leaving a legacy. Kordes requested to apply for a grant to plant White Oak trees through the city. Kordes says the trees would be in place in time for America’s 250th anniversary. Kordes mentions that even if the city doesn’t end up getting a grant, they will still look into finding something to leave a legacy.
